Research areas
INNOVATIVE WELDING TECHNIQUES
Study and development of both fusion and solid state innovative welding technique, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Laser Beam Welding (LBW). Micro and macro-structural, mechanical (static, dynamic and periodic) and electrochemical characterization of joints made in aluminum and titanium alloys with both above mentioned welding techniques in different geometrical configurations: butt, lap, T and corner joints.

HOT PRECISION FORMING
Study and development of hot precision forming processes to make alloys near net shape components. Influence of temperature and cooling on microstructure and properties of both forged and hot stretch formed titanium components in both alpha and beta regions; blow forming of light alloys and influence of friction stir processing on the formability of raw material.

HEALTH MONITORING
Structural health monitoring of metal components by means of sensor systems able to monitor both strain and open circuit potential. Detection of crack initiation and crack propagation in metal structures subjected to periodic stress conditions.

JOINING OF COMPOSITE
Study and development of joining of composites (both glass fiber reinforced plastics and fiber metal laminates) by means of mechanical fasteners. Determination of load capability of joints depending on fastener dimension, hole position with respect to edge distance, clearance or interference between hole and fastener, washer dimensions and clamping torque.

SURFACE TREATMENT
Study and development of titanium thermal oxidation in order to enhance wear properties of titanium and its alloys inducing the formation of the desired typology of titanium oxide. Microgeometrical, electrochemical and wear characterization of treated parts. Surface recovery and coating by means of cold gas dynamic spray.

NON DESTROYING EVALUATION
Non destroying evaluation (NDE) of both materials and products by means of lock in thermography. NDE of composites materials: determination of correct fiber content and disposition; defects detection at different depth by varying the frequency of heat stimulation; fiber and matrix failure detection in hole surroundings in composites structures joined by means of mechanical fasteners. NDE of welded joints: control of thermal characteristics of different zone of the joints, above all weld seam and heat affected zone.
